On April Fool’s Day, HGreg announced the launch of its pre-owned bicycle retail stores, HGreg Bikes.
This hoax was shared throughout the company’s social media networks thanks to a contest and a video featuring comedian Jérémy Demay, who invited internet users to find out more by visiting hgregoire.com/hgregoire-bikes
To keep the hoax credible, several photos of future outlets were prominently displayed, in addition to the same advantages of buying a vehicle from HGreg, such as the largest inventory of all types of bicycles, the 7-day money-back guarantee, the option of purchasing online and a meticulous inspection.
« Given the current environment, we could all do with a little more humour, » said Harry Kasparian, HGreg’s Chief Marketing Officer. “With bicycles being so popular this year, the response from consumers was very positive, and we were able to see that our business model is really appreciated, so much so that many people were disappointed to learn that it was only an April Fool’s joke.”
The campaign generated a lot of steam as HGreg’s phones were being bombarded with customers wanting to purchase bikes. The video itself reached a viral status, garnering over 100 000 views on HGreg’s social medias.
